Aamir Khan Admits Overconfidence Cost Him Dearly With Laal Singh Chaddha
In a candid interview on Game Changers, Aamir opens up about the financial missteps, creative challenges, and lessons learned from one of his most ambitious flops.

Bollywood superstar Aamir Khan has reflected on the disappointment of Laal Singh Chaddha, admitting that his overconfidence and lack of financial restraint played a huge role in the film’s underwhelming performance. Speaking on Komal Nahta’s YouTube show Game Changers, the actor revealed that he failed to apply his usual “economic filter” while producing the movie, something he always ensures to prevent losses. Riding high on a streak of back-to-back successes, Aamir confessed that he believed the film would automatically perform well, which led him to overlook practical budgeting.
The actor disclosed that while he expected the film to earn around ₹100–120 crore, he allowed the production costs to balloon to nearly ₹200 crore—more than double what the project should have cost. He admitted that ideally, the film’s budget should have been between ₹50 and 80 crore. Aamir explained that the COVID-19 pandemic significantly added to expenses since he continued to pay his crew during filming delays. He also mentioned that overseas shoots and certain expensive scenes, including one filmed in China that never made it to the final cut, pushed costs further out of control.
Beyond the financial miscalculations, Aamir also took a hard look at the creative aspects of the film. He acknowledged that Laal Singh Chaddha, being a remake of the Hollywood classic Forrest Gump, was always going to be a challenging project. While he wanted to remain true to the original’s emotional depth, he admitted that some of his dramatic choices may have come across as “overacting.” Filmmaker S.S. Rajamouli had even told him that parts of his performance felt overdone, a critique that Aamir says stayed with him.
Directed by Advait Chandan and written by Atul Kulkarni, the film starred Aamir alongside Kareena Kapoor Khan, Mona Singh, and Naga Chaitanya. Released in August 2022, Laal Singh Chaddha received mixed reviews and underperformed at the Indian box office. Despite its weak domestic run, the movie found greater success overseas, ranking among the top-grossing Hindi films internationally in 2022, even surpassing titles like The Kashmir Files and Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2 in certain markets.
Reflecting on the film’s fate, Aamir said the biggest lesson he learned was the importance of financial discipline. He stressed that he must once again place an economic cap on projects, ensuring budgets align with realistic earning potential. At the same time, he acknowledged that creative humility is equally vital—especially when adapting a beloved classic that comes with heavy audience expectations. Though disappointed, Aamir maintained that he does not regret taking the risk, considering it a necessary reminder that even the biggest stars must balance passion with practicality.
