Diana Penty Says Enough: “I’ll Be Me, Take It or Leave It”

After debuting in Cocktail and then stepping back for years, Diana opens up on the pressure to fit a mould in Bollywood—and why she finally embraced her true self.

Diana Penty made a sparkling entry into Bollywood with Cocktail (2012), starring alongside Deepika Padukone and Saif Ali Khan. Her natural screen presence and effortless charm immediately caught the audience’s attention. But soon after her debut, she disappeared from the big screen for nearly four years, only returning with the comedy Happy Bhag Jayegi in 2016.

Now, in a candid conversation with Hollywood Reporter India, Diana has revealed what really went on behind the scenes during those early years.

The actress admitted that, fresh out of her debut, she often felt pressured to change her personality in order to fit the industry’s expectations. “I’ve always been a bit shy, a bit of an introvert—not much of a people’s person,” she shared. “So I tried to take their advice—be easier to talk to, walk into a room a certain way, say the right things. I attempted it, but after many years, I realised it was such an effort. It was exhausting to be somebody that you’re not.”

After years of struggling with this internal conflict, Diana says she has finally found peace by accepting herself fully. “Eventually I was just like, screw that. I’m going to be me. Take it or leave it. If that means stupid jokes every now and then, or being sarcastic—that’s who I am. People don’t always get it, and I kept feeling this pressure to be more polite, more affable, more friendly. But after a point I realised it’s not sustainable in the long run. It took a toll on me.”

Her boldest statement came when she reflected on how the industry perceives her:
“If you don’t want to give me a film because of the kind of person I am, then it doesn’t matter to you what kind of actor I am. And that’s fine.”

With projects lined up and a renewed sense of confidence, Diana Penty’s journey is proof that staying authentic may be tough in Bollywood—but it’s also the only way forward.
