From Relentless Auditions to Stardom: Vidya Balan’s Turning Point in Parineeta
Despite Aishwarya Rai being the initial pick, Vidya Balan’s grit—after nearly 75 auditions—won her the lead in Parineeta, marking the launch of her celebrated Bollywood career.

Vidya Balan’s meteoric rise in Hindi cinema began with a test of sheer determination. Her debut in the 2005 film Parineeta—produced by Vidhu Vinod Chopra—only came after nearly 75 auditions, and she wasn’t even the first choice for the role of Lalita.
Chopra admitted that he initially envisioned Aishwarya Rai for the part, saying, “The character is one that two men fall in love with… so the heroine has to be bigger.” Yet, something in Vidya’s audition changed his mind. “Let me see what she can do… she cleared it,” he recalled.
Composer Shantanu Moitra also remembered Vidya’s arduous journey: rejected time and again, she continued to show up. By her 75th audition, weighed down by frustration, she still gave it one more try when director Pradeep Sarkar suggested a fresh look test. Vidya obliged before rushing off to attend a Bryan Adams concert in Mumbai, convinced the effort would again come to nothing.
But that night, during the concert, came the call that changed everything. At first, Vidya thought it was another rejection and almost ignored it. Then a message arrived: “Dude, it’s over—you are Parineeta.” Overwhelmed, she broke down in tears, realizing her persistence had finally paid off.
The story recently resurfaced during the film’s 20th-anniversary celebration, where Chopra revealed how Vidya once snapped in frustration during her tests, exclaiming, “Who does he think he is?”—a glimpse of the immense emotional strain she was enduring at the time.
With Parineeta, Vidya not only silenced all doubts but also established herself as one of Bollywood’s most versatile actors. She went on to win the Screen Award for Best Female Debut and began a career defined by resilience, talent, and an unforgettable breakthrough moment.
