Sophie Turner Says Controversial “Game of Thrones” Scene Highlighted Harsh Realities for Women

The actress defends Sansa Stark’s infamous Season 5 storyline, arguing the show confronted systemic patriarchy and sparked important conversations about women’s trauma.

In a candid new interview with Flaunt magazine, Sophie Turner has revisited one of the most polarizing moments of Game of Thrones—Sansa Stark’s wedding-night assault in Season 5. The 29-year-old actress, who portrayed Sansa across all eight seasons, acknowledged the backlash but maintains that the series was doing “a lot of justice to women” by shedding light on painful historical and social truths.

“I did feel—and still do—that Game of Thrones shone a light on things people said we couldn’t show,” Turner explained. “I understand it can be triggering, but it reflected the fight women have had for centuries—being treated as objects, constantly assaulted. I don’t know a single woman who hasn’t experienced some form of that.”

Turner admitted that men often doubt her when she says almost every woman she knows has faced harassment. “That’s because we don’t talk about it enough—we shy away from it,” she added. Reflecting on how sensitivities have shifted, she said that if the show aired today, it would “definitely” include trigger warnings. Still, she remains proud of being part of a story that refused to avoid difficult realities.

The Season 5 episode “Unbowed, Unbent, Unbroken” sparked outrage when Ramsay Bolton brutally assaulted Sansa, with Theon Greyjoy forced to witness the act. Critics condemned the show for unnecessary violence against women and for straying from George R.R. Martin’s original novels, where the assault never takes place.

Back in 2015, Turner defended her character’s resilience, insisting that Sansa’s strength lay in her ability to endure and strategize quietly rather than lash out. Meanwhile, producer Bryan Cogman also defended the creative choice, arguing that the show stayed true to the brutal reality of its fictional world and that Sansa’s decision was part of her evolution into a calculating survivor.

Today, Turner sees her role and the controversial storyline as part of a wider cultural conversation about gender, trauma, and resilience. While acknowledging the pain the scene caused many viewers, she believes its value lies in refusing to hide from atrocities women have faced throughout history.
