Shrek 5 Pushed to Summer 2027, Escaping Holiday Box-Office Mayhem

Universal and DreamWorks delay the much-anticipated ogre sequel to June 30, 2027—reintroducing Zendaya alongside the returning cast and sidestepping stiff competition from Avengers, Dune, and Ice Age

Universal Pictures and DreamWorks Animation have officially postponed Shrek 5 from its original December 23, 2026 release date to June 30, 2027, positioning the animated feature for a prime summer launch. This strategic shift allows the film to avoid direct competition with holiday heavyweights such as Avengers: Doomsday, Dune: Part III, and Ice Age 6, all slated for December 18, 2026.

In a related move, Universal has reassigned an untitled Illumination project to the April 16, 2027 slot, previously occupied by Shrek 5. The new June release date conveniently aligns with the long U.S. Independence Day weekend, offering a strong opportunity to attract family audiences.

The sequel sees the return of franchise favorites Mike Myers (Shrek), Eddie Murphy (Donkey), and Cameron Diaz (Fiona), joined by Zendaya, who voices Shrek and Fiona’s teenage daughter, Felicia.

Directing duties are shared by Shrek veterans Walt Dohrn and Conrad Vernon, along with Brad Ableson, co-director of Minions: The Rise of Gru. The production team includes Gina Shay and Illumination CEO Chris Meledandri, ensuring a powerhouse creative lineup.

This marks the first mainline Shrek movie since Shrek Forever After in 2010, and nearly 26 years since the Oscar-winning original introduced audiences to the grumpy green ogre, the feisty Princess Fiona, and the ever-loyal Donkey. Known for its witty subversion of fairy-tale tropes, the franchise remains one of the most beloved in animation history.
