AR Murugadoss Returns to Tamil Cinema After Hindi Setback with Sivakarthikeyan’s Madharasi

Following the failure of his Bollywood film Sikandar, Murugadoss is back to his roots with the high-stakes Tamil action thriller Madharasi, releasing this September.

After years of directing successful remakes and originals in Tamil, Telugu, and Hindi, AR Murugadoss is making a strong return to Tamil cinema. While his earlier Hindi ventures like Ghajini and Holiday—remakes of his own Tamil hits—found success at the box office, his original Hindi project Sikandar, starring Salman Khan, failed to live up to expectations. The film faced criticism from both critics and audiences, marking a rare misstep in the filmmaker’s otherwise solid track record.

Now, Murugadoss is turning the page with Madharasi, a big-budget Tamil action entertainer starring Sivakarthikeyan in the lead. The film is scheduled for theatrical release on September 5, 2025, and is being positioned as a pan-India release. It will also be released in Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada, and a dubbed Hindi version titled Dil Madharasi.

Murugadoss has been candid about the reasons behind his recent failure. He admitted that his creative strengths lie in his native language, Tamil, where he naturally connects with the audience and is more in control of the dialogue, cultural references, and tone. He explained that in Hindi, his process depends heavily on script translations and external interpretations, which limit his ability to deliver with nuance. While he feels more at ease working in Telugu, he confessed to feeling “handicapped” when directing Hindi films.

Madharasi marks a new collaboration between Murugadoss and Sivakarthikeyan, although the director had earlier written the screenplay for Maan Karate, which starred the actor. The film features Rukmini Vasanth making her Tamil debut as the female lead, with Vidyut Jammwal playing the antagonist. Supporting cast members include Biju Menon, Vikranth, and Shabeer Kallarakkal.

The music is composed by Anirudh Ravichander, and the first single is set to drop on July 31. The team is planning an international audio launch in London, a strategic move to amplify buzz ahead of release. The promotional campaign has already begun, with teasers and song previews creating strong anticipation among fans.

With Madharasi, AR Murugadoss hopes to reconnect with his creative roots and deliver a film that reflects his full storytelling potential—one anchored in a language and culture he understands deeply.
