Taron Egerton Declines James Bond Role Amid Villeneuve’s 007 Reboot Plans
The Kingsman star rules himself out of the Bond race, citing personal doubts and career priorities, as Denis Villeneuve prepares to redefine the franchise.

As speculation intensifies over who will be the next James Bond, one major name has officially stepped away from the race — Taron Egerton.
Best known for his breakout role in the Kingsman series and his Golden Globe-winning turn as Elton John in Rocketman, Egerton has long been seen as a potential successor to Daniel Craig. With Amazon now holding the rights to the franchise following the transition from producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson, the search for the next 007 is heating up. But despite fitting the bill — British, charismatic, and action-ready — Egerton has firmly ruled himself out.
In a recent conversation with Collider, Egerton explained, “I think I’m too messy for that. I really love James Bond, especially Daniel Craig’s era, but I don’t think I’m the right fit.” He added, “There are so many great young actors who’d be fantastic for the role. Honestly, it’d probably be wasted on me.”
Egerton further elaborated that the commitment and lifestyle demands of playing Bond are not in sync with where he is professionally and personally. “It’s a massive undertaking. As far as I know, nobody’s asked me — but even if they did, I don’t think it’s the kind of thing that would bring me happiness. It kind of consumes your life,” he said.
This isn’t the first time the actor has distanced himself from the franchise. In a 2023 interview with The Telegraph, Egerton opened up about body image pressures and the long-term responsibilities tied to playing Bond. “I’ve always struggled with my weight,” he admitted. “Being Bond is more than acting — it’s like being a brand ambassador. That could be fun for a short time, but I read somewhere Barbara Broccoli said it’s a 15-year commitment. That’s huge.”
Meanwhile, the Bond franchise is gearing up for a significant creative shift, with Dune director Denis Villeneuve officially announced as the next filmmaker to helm the iconic spy saga. Sharing his excitement, Villeneuve stated, “I grew up watching Bond films with my dad. I’m a die-hard fan. Bond is sacred territory to me, and I intend to honor that legacy while setting the stage for thrilling new adventures.”
While fans continue to speculate about who will don the tuxedo next, one thing is clear: Taron Egerton won’t be shaken or stirred into taking the role.
