James Cameron Reveals Plans for Animated ‘Avatar’ Stories

As Avatar: Fire and Ash gears up for release, Cameron teases a possible animated anthology series and confirms a mysterious 3D collaboration with pop star Billie Eilish.

James Cameron clearly isn’t done expanding the world of Avatar. While the third installment of the franchise, Avatar: Fire and Ash, is set to hit theaters on December 19, the visionary director is already thinking far beyond Pandora’s forests and oceans.

In a new interview with Empire magazine, Cameron revealed his ambition to dive into animated storytelling within the Avatar universe. “I told Disney, ‘I want to create an animated anthology series set in the Avatar world—stories you wouldn’t expect from that universe,’” he said. Cameron even floated the idea of an animated feature film, which could either be released theatrically or on streaming platforms.

Referencing The Animatrix—the cult anthology based on The Matrix—Cameron said he admired how it explored unconventional, peripheral narratives within a larger cinematic world. That, he hopes, could be a blueprint for his vision of an animated Avatar spin-off.

However, these plans are still in early development. “We haven’t done much with that yet,” Cameron admitted. “We’re still gathering our stories. I need to find the right boutique filmmakers and animators who are passionate about taking this on.”

Meanwhile, Avatar: Fire and Ash—the much-anticipated third chapter in the saga—recently dropped its first trailer, which has already been praised as visually stunning and “some of the most beautiful footage” of the year, according to early fan reactions and online buzz.

And that’s not the only surprise Cameron has in store. Earlier this month, pop sensation Billie Eilish teased a mysterious 3D project with the Titanic director during her Manchester concert. “You may have noticed there are more cameras than usual tonight,” she told the audience. “I can’t say much, but I’m working on something very, very special with someone named James Cameron—and it’s going to be in 3D.”

While details remain under wraps, this collaboration has already sparked widespread speculation about what genre-bending spectacle the duo might deliver.

With Avatar sequels lined up through 2031 and new experiments in animation and 3D underway, Cameron shows no signs of slowing down his creative machine. One thing’s clear—his Pandora still has many secrets left to reveal.
