When Chunky Pandey Was Paid to Cry at a Funeral: A Bizarre Tale from His Struggling Days

Known for his comic timing and distinctive on-screen presence, the actor recently opened up about the bizarre gigs he took on during his struggling days, including one where he was accidentally hired to attend a stranger’s funeral—for money.

In a revealing chat with Bollywood Bubble, Chunky shared how, in the absence of social media platforms like Instagram or YouTube back in the day, actors had limited income options outside films and live appearances. “There were no ads, no digital work—only events and movies,” he said.

Recalling one such “event,” Chunky narrated an incident where an organiser offered him money to attend a gathering and asked him to wear white. Assuming it was a themed event, he showed up—only to realize it was a funeral.

“I arrived, saw a huge crowd dressed in white, and still thought it must be some big event,” Chunky recalled. “Then I walked inside and saw a dead body. I genuinely thought the organiser had passed away. But he came up to me and said, ‘This is a funeral I’ve called you for.’”

To make things more surreal, the organiser offered him extra money if he cried. Another actor who accompanied him, and who managed to cry convincingly, was apparently paid an additional ₹50,000 for the performance.

As strange as it sounds, there was a reason behind this odd request. Chunky explained that the deceased was heavily in debt. Fearing harassment from creditors, the family spread a rumour that he had produced a film and lost all his money in it. Hiring actors to show up at the funeral was meant to support the illusion that he had been a film producer.

The story, both bizarre and humorous, offers a glimpse into the unpredictable and often absurd world of showbiz hustle. And Chunky Pandey’s willingness to laugh at himself makes it even more entertaining.
