Guy Ritchie Exits ‘Road House 2’; Amazon MGM Fast-Tracks New Director Search
Despite Ritchie’s departure, Jake Gyllenhaal returns for the highly anticipated sequel as Amazon MGM Studios eyes a fall shoot and Dave Bautista eyes a major role.
Guy Ritchie has stepped away from directing Road House 2, the follow-up to the successful 2024 Amazon MGM Studios film starring Jake Gyllenhaal. The original reboot garnered over 80 million viewers within its first eight weeks on Prime Video, becoming one of the platform’s top-performing titles.
Despite the sudden change in direction, Amazon MGM remains fully committed to the sequel and is actively seeking a new director to ensure the project stays on course for a fall 2025 production start. Sources confirm that casting is still underway, with actor Dave Bautista—known for his roles in the Guardians of the Galaxy and Dune franchises—currently in talks for a key role.
Road House 2 will once again see Jake Gyllenhaal reprise his role as Dalton, a former UFC fighter turned bouncer, from a script penned by Bad Boys: Ride or Die writer Will Beall. The project will be produced by Charles Roven and Alex Gartner of Atlas Entertainment, alongside Gyllenhaal’s Nine Stories Productions, with Josh McLaughlin and Ivan Atkinson on board as executive producers.
The 2024 film, helmed by Doug Liman, premiered at SXSW and reimagined the cult 1989 classic that originally starred Patrick Swayze. Gyllenhaal’s version transported viewers to the gritty underbelly of a Florida Keys bar, blending action with the tropical noir aesthetic. The original film also featured icons like Ben Gazzara, Kelly Lynch, and Sam Elliott.
As Amazon MGM prioritizes Road House 2 for its streaming lineup, the search for a visionary replacement for Ritchie—whose past works include Sherlock Holmes and Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels—is now underway. Ritchie’s most commercially successful film to date remains Disney’s live-action Aladdin, which grossed a staggering $1.05 billion globally in 2019.
