Vijay Deverakonda’s ‘Kingdom’ Ditches Pan-India Plan Amid OTT Pressure and Industry Setbacks

With Telugu cinema facing financial strain and multiplex-imposed OTT windows, ‘Kingdom’ chooses a focused regional release in Telugu and Tamil to minimize risk.

The pan-India dream seems to be losing its shine for Telugu filmmakers. Lavish promotional budgets and sky-high release costs have left producers struggling to recover their investments—regardless of whether the star is a seasoned icon or a rising face. The situation has worsened with Hindi multiplexes now enforcing an eight-week gap between theatrical and OTT premieres, making recovery even more challenging. Recent high-profile Telugu films like HIT 3, Kubera, and Kannappa have failed to break even, reflecting the risks of wide-scale national releases.

Against this turbulent backdrop, Vijay Deverakonda is taking a different approach with his upcoming film Kingdom. Despite being the most expensive project of his career, Kingdom will not release as a pan-Indian film. Instead, the makers are opting for a more targeted strategy—limiting the theatrical release to Telugu and Tamil languages only. The reason? A lucrative four-week OTT deal with Netflix that conflicts with the eight-week demand of Hindi multiplexes. By avoiding a Hindi theatrical release, the producers can capitalize on early OTT streaming without penalty.

This focused strategy isn’t just about risk avoidance. The buzz surrounding Kingdom has been steadily building, especially after the recent release date announcement teaser. Directed by Gowtam Tinnanuri and featuring Vijay Deverakonda as a tough cop, the film pairs him with debutante Bhagyashri Borse. With Anirudh scoring the music and S Naga Vamsi producing, Kingdom is positioning itself as a strong regional blockbuster.

In an industry learning to recalibrate post-pandemic and amidst shifting OTT dynamics, the team behind Kingdom seems to be making a calculated move—betting big where it matters most.
