Rajkummar Rao to Step Into Sourav Ganguly’s Shoes in Long-Awaited Biopic

After much buzz and Ganguly’s own nod, Rao is set to headline the cricket legend’s life story—shooting begins January, with a December 2025 release on the cards.

Cricket and cinema—India’s twin obsessions—are merging once again, and this time, it’s to celebrate one of the most iconic captains in Indian cricket history: Sourav Ganguly. After blockbuster biopics on MS Dhoni and Kapil Dev, the long-anticipated biopic on Ganguly is finally shifting gears, with Rajkummar Rao confirmed to play the lead.

For months, speculation had been swirling around who would portray the ‘Prince of Kolkata,’ with actors like Ranbir Kapoor and Ayushmann Khurrana also reportedly in the running. But recent developments suggest the choice is now locked—and it’s someone the former Indian skipper appears to personally approve. Ganguly, in a recent interaction with PTI, hinted at the project’s progress and revealed that shooting for the film will begin in January 2025.

“It’s going well. It will be released next December,” Ganguly said, adding, “Shooting doesn’t take that much time—around three months. The time-consuming parts are story writing, scripting, and post-production.”

Rao’s casting comes at an exciting time in his career. He recently appeared in Mr. & Mrs. Mahi, a fictional cricket-themed drama that earned praise for its emotional depth. He is currently gearing up for the release of his next film, Maalik, hitting theatres on July 11.

With filming set to begin early next year, the Ganguly biopic is poised to be another feather in the cap for cricket-inspired cinema—and one that fans of Dada and Indian cricket will be eagerly awaiting.
