Sarah Michelle Gellar Hints at ‘Buffy’ Reboot With a Modern Twist and Possible Return of Iconic Characters
The original Buffy star is set to reprise her role while teasing a more balanced tone, modern themes, and even a resurrection of fan-favorite characters in Hulu’s mysterious new pilot.

Sarah Michelle Gellar is officially returning to the world of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and she’s bringing some fresh blood—and maybe a few old ghosts—with her.
The iconic actress, who played Buffy Summers from 1997 to 2003, is set to reprise her role in Hulu’s upcoming reboot of the cult classic. While many details remain tightly under wraps, the project—currently known as the “Untitled Buffyverse Pilot”—has already cast Star Wars: Skeleton Crew actress Ryan Kiera Armstrong as a new Slayer, indicating a new generation is stepping up alongside the original hero.
In a recent interview with Vanity Fair Italia, Gellar shared her excitement about returning and hinted at what fans can expect. “The new version will be lighter in tone than the darker seasons we ended with,” she revealed. “We’re aiming for a blend—old faces and new ones. Ideally, I’d love to bring back everyone who died, but of course, we need to create space for new stories too.”

Gellar, who is also executive producing the reboot, emphasized the importance of making the series relevant for a new generation. While reflecting on her original run without the pressures of today’s social media, she acknowledged that the reboot must address the realities of the modern world. “Buffy has always been a series about outsiders,” she said. “Now we’re exploring how those themes evolve in a digital age—especially in a society shaped by social media and shifting space-time boundaries.”
As the Buffyverse prepares for its next chapter, fans are left wondering who might return, what new threats await, and how this beloved mythology will transform for a new era.
