Al Pacino Turned Down Han Solo Despite Massive Offer: “I Didn’t Understand Star Wars”
The Oscar-winning actor passed on George Lucas’ galaxy far, far away—saying he didn’t “speak the language” of the iconic role that launched Harrison Ford to stardom.

Long before Harrison Ford shot to intergalactic fame as Han Solo, the part was offered to another Hollywood legend: Al Pacino. Despite the potential for a huge payday, Pacino famously passed on the role—and now he’s reflecting on why.
In a conversation with Entertainment Weekly, the veteran actor revisited his decision to turn down Star Wars, a story he first revealed in his 2024 memoir Sonny Boy. At the time, Pacino was performing on Broadway when he received the script from George Lucas and Francis Ford Coppola’s team at American Zoetrope in San Francisco. Though impressed by their creativity, he simply couldn’t connect with the material.
“I went to their office back then—they were idealists, making amazing films,” Pacino recalled. “They gave me this script, and I just didn’t get it. I sent it to my mentor Charlie Loughton, and he didn’t get it either.”

Despite being offered a fortune, Pacino declined. “I can’t play something if I don’t speak the language,” he said, admitting that the sci-fi setting felt too alien at the time. Reflecting on his decision now, Pacino joked, “I think I was in the mood to give Harrison Ford a career.”
Ford went on to become a pop culture icon with his portrayal of Han Solo, debuting in 1977’s A New Hope and reprising the role in multiple Star Wars sequels over four decades. As for Pacino, while he missed out on one of Hollywood’s biggest franchises, he built his own legendary career on films like The Godfather, Scarface, and Scent of a Woman.
