Rob Riggle and Jordana Brewster Set Sail in Veteran Drama ‘The Pirate King’
Directed by Josh Plasse, the film follows a Marine veteran’s redemption journey through pirate reenactments, with production kicking off this month.

Rob Riggle and Jordana Brewster are officially on board for The Pirate King, a poignant new drama from director Josh Plasse. Backed by Pine Bay Pictures, Morning Moon, and Traction, the film is set to begin production this month.
In The Pirate King, Riggle takes on the role of a Marine veteran grappling with PTSD and addiction. His life takes an unexpected turn when he joins a group of pirate reenactors—an unconventional path that offers him a chance at redemption, a fight for custody of his daughter, and the hope of reclaiming the life he once lost. The story, inspired by the real-life adventures of pirate Captain Todd Willis, was written by Plasse and based on an original concept by Brev Moss.
A former Marine himself, Riggle—who served for 23 years and retired as a lieutenant colonel—shared his personal connection to the story: “This script captures the hope and hardship veterans face every day. I’m honored to help tell a story that resonates so deeply with those who’ve served.”

Director Josh Plasse described the film as deeply personal, calling it “a love letter to Virginia Beach,” where he grew up. As the son of a Navy SEAL, Plasse brings first-hand experience of the sacrifices military families endure. “This film explores the struggles of veterans returning to civilian life and the unexpected healing that comes from community—in this case, through the quirky but passionate world of pirate reenactors,” he said.
Jordana Brewster, best known for her role in the Fast & Furious series, also praised the script, saying, “Josh wrote a beautiful story filled with humor and heart. It’s a privilege to be a part of something that highlights the importance of supporting our veterans.”
Known for his comedic roots on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart and film roles in Step Brothers, The Hangover, and 21 Jump Street, Riggle brings both authenticity and emotional depth to this unique role.
