James Gunn Reveals Jason Momoa’s First Message About Playing Lobo: “F—ing Lobo”
After years of campaigning, Jason Momoa is officially playing Lobo in DC Studios’ “Supergirl: World of Tomorrow,” marking a bold new chapter in James Gunn’s DC Universe.

Jason Momoa has finally landed his dream role as Lobo in the newly rebooted DC Universe, and fans are buzzing with excitement. After years of expressing his passion for the cigar-chomping, space-faring antihero, Momoa’s casting was officially confirmed last December. Now, DC Studios co-head James Gunn is giving fans a glimpse into how it all came together.
In a recent post on X (formerly Twitter), Gunn shared a text message exchange from late 2022, shortly after he and Peter Safran took over as heads of DC Studios. The message from Momoa was short but clear: “Fucking Lobo.” Gunn’s reply? “Dude, I’ve said you should be Lobo for years. No lie.”
Reflecting on that moment, Gunn wrote, “On the anniversary of Lobo, I can’t help but think of a text I received from Jason Momoa on the morning it was announced Peter & I were the heads of DC Studios — the day Jason & I first discussed him joining the DCU as Lobo. I’ve loved watching Jason bring him to life and can’t wait to share that with all of you.”

Momoa’s Lobo will make his highly anticipated debut in Supergirl: World of Tomorrow, which is currently in production. The film stars House of the Dragon breakout Milly Alcock as Kara Zor-El and serves as the second installment in Gunn and Safran’s new DC Universe, following Gunn’s Superman, set for release in July 2025. Supergirl is directed by Craig Gillespie, known for Cruella and I, Tonya, and also features Matthias Schoenaerts as the villainous Krem of the Yellow Hill and Eve Ridley as Ruthye Mary Knolle.
Longtime DC fans know Momoa’s love for Lobo runs deep. In a past interview with Fandango, he gushed about his dream of playing the intergalactic bounty hunter. “I collect comics, and I don’t do so much anymore, but he was always my favorite,” Momoa said. “I always wanted to play Lobo because I’m like, ‘Hello? It’s the perfect role.’ I mean, listen. If they call and ask me to play him, it’s a fuck yeah.”
Momoa previously headlined the DC Universe as Aquaman, starring in Zack Snyder’s Justice League and two standalone Aquaman films. His run as the King of Atlantis concluded with 2023’s Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom. But even before that film hit theaters, Momoa was vocal about his excitement for a fresh start under Gunn and Safran’s leadership.

Speaking to Entertainment Tonight in 2022, Momoa teased big things ahead. “With Peter Safran and Mr. Gunn at the helm now at DC, I’m very excited,” he said. “One of my dreams come true will be happening under their watch. So, stay tuned!”
Audiences won’t have to wait much longer to see Momoa’s Lobo in action. Supergirl: World of Tomorrow is set to hit theaters on June 26, 2026.
