Harry Potter TV Series Gears Up for Casting as Filming Nears
32,000 Auditions, New Hogwarts Stories, and Controversy Addressed Ahead of 2026 Debut

HBO’s highly anticipated Harry Potter television series is making strides toward its 2026 debut on Max, with casting well underway and filming scheduled to begin in mid-summer 2025. During a presentation for Max’s 2025 slate, Casey Bloys and members of the show’s creative team shared exciting updates about the project.
Director and executive producer Mark Mylod revealed that a staggering 32,000 children auditioned for young roles, including the iconic Harry Potter. With a team reviewing up to 1,000 auditions daily, the shortlist will be finalized by January 2025. “We’re workshopping with some incredible talent,” Mylod shared, emphasizing their dedication to casting “the cream of British acting talent” and staying true to the books’ canonical characterizations.
Writer and showrunner Francesca Gardiner confirmed the series will align with the books’ original character ages, such as Severus Snape, portrayed as 31, and Lily and James Potter as 21. While honoring the legacy of Alan Rickman, who famously played Snape, Mylod said they are searching for a fresh talent to redefine the character for a new generation. Reports suggest actor Paapa Essiedu is being considered for the role.
Fans can also expect fresh perspectives on Hogwarts, with unexplored areas of the wizarding school coming to life in the show’s more naturalistic approach, contrasting the stylized aesthetic of the films. The series aims to be a “faithful adaptation” of J.K. Rowling’s globally beloved books while introducing a new cast to build on the franchise’s enduring legacy.
Amid the buzz, the production hasn’t been without controversy. When asked about Rowling’s contentious remarks on transgender issues, Bloys expressed confidence, citing the immense popularity of the Hogwarts Legacy video game as evidence of continued fan support. “I’m not concerned about consumer response,” Bloys said, underscoring the series’ potential to captivate audiences once again.
With a new cast, untold stories, and a commitment to Rowling’s vision, the Harry Potter TV series is shaping up to be one of the most ambitious adaptations yet.
