Melissa Barrera Reflects on Career Fallout After Being Fired from Scream VII
The Actress Opens Up About a “Dark Year” and the Divided Fan Response to Her Departure

Melissa Barrera, known for her role as Sam Carpenter in the Scream franchise, has opened up about the challenging aftermath of being removed from Scream VII following her comments on the Israel-Hamas conflict.
In a candid interview with The Independent, the Your Monster star described how the controversy impacted her career. “It was quiet for like 10 months,” Barrera shared, adding that while small acting opportunities still came her way, major offers dwindled. “The message was, ‘Oh, she probably doesn’t have work, she’ll say yes to anything.’”
Reflecting on the toll, Barrera admitted, “It was the darkest and hardest year of my life, and I had to reevaluate everything. There were times when I felt like my life was over.”
Barrera was let go by Spyglass Media Group, which stated a “zero tolerance for antisemitism or the incitement of hate in any form,” after she called for a ceasefire on social media. Her departure was followed by Jenna Ortega’s exit from the project, reportedly due to scheduling conflicts with her hit Netflix series, Wednesday.
Despite the shake-ups, Scream VII is moving forward with original star Neve Campbell returning as Sidney Prescott and Kevin Williamson stepping in as director. Fans remain divided, with some boycotting the franchise over Barrera’s dismissal while others are excited about Campbell’s return after her absence from the previous installment.
Addressing the polarization among fans, Barrera remarked, “There have always been Scream factions. Some people love you, some people hate you. If they want to watch the next one? Cool. If they don’t? Also cool.”
The actress also reflected on the intersection of art and personal values, comparing the situation to audiences grappling with the works of controversial figures like R. Kelly or Woody Allen. “You just gotta act according to how you preach,” she said, emphasizing that it all comes down to individual morals and priorities.
