Rana Daggubati Opens Up About OTT Trends and Industry Challenges

The Telugu star shares insights on the evolving digital landscape, his new talk show, and the economics behind OTT platforms.

Rana Daggubati, one of Telugu cinema’s most versatile actors, is known for his strong connections within the industry and with major digital platforms like Amazon Prime Video and Netflix. Post-pandemic, Rana had envisioned several projects for these streaming giants, but many didn’t come to fruition. Now, he’s back in the spotlight with The Rana Daggubati Show on Amazon Prime Video.

In a recent interaction ahead of the show’s release, Rana addressed the concept of “OTT Dictatorship,” a term often used to describe the perceived control these platforms have over content creators. “Nobody dictates anyone,” Rana clarified. “If you have a saleable product, no one dictates terms to you. The riskier candidates face challenges. OTT platforms have made producers feel secure and significantly increased the number of films being made.”

Rana also delved into the economics of the streaming industry. “There are 4-5 major OTT platforms, and they can’t buy every film. They have limited budgets, and for global giants, India is just one of many markets. They aim to maximize coverage across Indian languages,” he explained.

He pointed out how the boom in OTT content during the pandemic led to unrealistic expectations. “For 2-3 years, it seemed like the growth would continue indefinitely, but that’s not sustainable. India produces 400-500 films annually, but OTT platforms can’t acquire them all. They must focus on generating revenue from their investments. In the past, platforms bought numerous Telugu films, but with more regional options emerging, their investments have diversified. These platforms are global companies with their own strategic priorities.”

Through his candid insights, Rana highlighted the dynamic nature of the entertainment industry and the balancing act streaming platforms must perform to cater to diverse audiences while maintaining profitability.
