James Gunn Embraces R-Rated DC Projects for Bold Storytelling

The DC Studios co-head is unafraid to explore mature themes, emphasizing authenticity over risk aversion.

James Gunn, the creative force behind DC Studios, is open to developing R-rated projects if the story demands it. Alongside co-leader Peter Safran, Gunn is crafting a new vision for the DC Universe, one that prioritizes bold and authentic storytelling over cautious experimentation.

In a recent interview with Collider, Gunn underscored his philosophy, citing the success of The Suicide Squad (2021) and the HBO series Peacemaker. Both projects, known for their edgy, mature themes, resonated with audiences. “We’re not about ‘see how it does,’” Gunn said. “We’ve got one opportunity to take these characters and really press forward. If we tell good, authentic stories, we’ll build a universe that people will love for a long time.”

Gunn clarified that the rating of a project—whether G, PG, or R—is secondary to its narrative needs. “If a story is going to be R-rated, we’re totally okay with that,” he explained. “It’s just about telling a story worthy of the characters.” He also highlighted the broader appeal of R-rated superhero content, pointing to the success of Marvel’s Deadpool and Logan.

DC’s new era kicks off with Creature Commandos, premiering December 5 on Max. Meanwhile, Gunn’s highly anticipated Superman: Legacy, marking his first foray into the Man of Steel’s story, is set to debut in July 2025. As Gunn and Safran push boundaries, fans can expect a diverse mix of stories that challenge conventions and expand the DC Universe.
