Vikrant Massey Responds to Criticism Over Secular Beliefs Ahead of The Sabarmati Report Release

As The Sabarmati Report trailer sparks debate, Vikrant Massey stands firm on secularism, addressing online trolls and defending his personal values through powerful words and personal experiences.

Fresh off the success of 12th Fail, Vikrant Massey is gearing up for his next release, The Sabarmati Report. However, after the trailer’s launch, the actor faced backlash from critics questioning his secular beliefs. In a strong response, Massey defended his values by sharing that he comes from a family with an inter-caste background, has followed a similar path in his own marriage, and has a brother who converted to a different religion. He asserted that his life speaks volumes about his commitment to secularism.

In The Sabarmati Report, Massey takes on the role of a journalist, a role that has ironically led some to question his values. During an appearance on Shubhankar Mishra’s show Unplugged, Massey addressed the controversy, stressing that true secularism means supporting others irrespective of their religion or background. He further pointed out that social media often pushes people into polarized perspectives, which he finds restrictive and damaging. Despite these pressures, Massey maintains that he is both secular and liberal, standing by his beliefs even amidst online debates.

When asked about his personal understanding of secularism, the 12th Fail actor described it as a harmonious coexistence that respects all cultures while remaining proud of one’s own identity. Massey also spoke about his evolving views, revealing how his perception of religious communities has shifted over time to embrace unity over division.

Reflecting on values that matter deeply to him, he stated that uplifting oneself by belittling others goes against the spirit of unity in diversity, a principle he holds close to his heart. Highlighting his personal journey, Massey said, “The country’s DNA is still unity in diversity. I am still the same. You know the situation in my house. My parents had an inter-caste marriage. So did I. My brother converted to another religion. What can be more secular?”

The trailer for The Sabarmati Report introduces Massey as a Hindi-speaking journalist determined to establish himself in the field. His character’s journey takes a dark turn when he uncovers uncomfortable truths about the Godhra train tragedy, reportedly suppressed by his senior, played by Ridhi Dogra. The story delves into a complex narrative, exploring an underrepresented perspective of the incident and its impact on countless lives.

The Sabarmati Report is produced by Balaji Motion Pictures and Vikir Films, with Vikrant Massey, Raashii Khanna, Ridhi Dogra, and Barkha Singh in key roles. Directed by Dheeraj Sarna and produced by Shobha Kapoor, Ektaa R Kapoor, Amul V. Mohan, and Anshul Mohan, the film is slated for a theatrical release on November 15, 2024.
