Mirzapur’s Cinematic Leap: Hit Series Set to Dominate Theaters in 2026

Amazon MGM Studios and Excel Entertainment are taking a bold step by transforming their wildly popular streaming series Mirzapur into a theatrical feature film. This move signifies a major shift in India’s entertainment landscape, as Mirzapur becomes one of the first Indian web series to transition from streaming to theaters.

The crime thriller, known for its gritty portrayal of power struggles and criminal rivalries in the heartland of Uttar Pradesh, will hit theaters in 2026. Puneet Krishna, the creator of the series, will oversee the screenplay, while Gurmmeet Singh, who directed 17 episodes of the original show, will take the director’s chair for the film.

Fans can expect the return of the series’ iconic cast, including Pankaj Tripathi as the fearsome Kaleen Bhaiya, Ali Fazal as the revenge-driven Guddu Pandit, and Divyenndu as the volatile Munna Tripathi. Abhishek Banerjee is also set to reprise his role as the Compounder, adding to the excitement surrounding the theatrical release.

Following an exclusive eight-week run in cinemas, the film will be available for streaming on Prime Video across 240 territories worldwide. This announcement follows the record-breaking success of Mirzapur Season 3 on Prime Video, with a fourth season already in development, scheduled to release after the film.

Manish Menghani, director of content licensing at Prime Video India, shared his enthusiasm for the project:

“With unforgettable characters, gripping dialogues, and a narrative that resonates deeply with our audience, Mirzapur has become one of the most beloved franchises of our time. At Prime Video, we are committed to telling authentic stories that reflect the diversity of our viewers, and taking this franchise to theaters marks an exciting new chapter. Partnering with Excel Entertainment, which shares our creative vision, we’re thrilled to offer fans a unique cinematic experience.”

Excel Entertainment, known for its acclaimed productions such as Gully Boy (India’s official entry to the 2019 Oscars) and the Berlinale Series-nominated Dahaad, continues to push boundaries with innovative storytelling. Their recent film, Superboys of Malegaon, was showcased at the Toronto International Film Festival and the BFI London Film Festival, further cementing their reputation as pioneers in Indian cinema.

The expansion of Mirzapur to the big screen not only highlights the growing synergy between streaming platforms and traditional cinema but also opens new doors for storytelling, bridging the gap between digital and theatrical entertainment. Fans are eagerly waiting to see their favorite characters and heart-pounding drama unfold on the silver screen, promising an unforgettable cinematic experience.
