Andrew Garfield Reflects on Feeling “Too Old” for Spider-Man, and How a Shift in Mindset Landed Him the Role

The actor credits his screen test success to a freeing approach advised by his acting coach, which led to his iconic portrayal of Spider-Man in “The Amazing Spider-Man” movies

Andrew Garfield recently opened up about his experience auditioning for the role of Peter Parker/Spider-Man on the “Happy Sad Confused” podcast, revealing that he initially felt “too old” for the part. Garfield, who eventually secured the lead in The Amazing Spider-Man (2012) and its 2014 sequel, admitted he had doubts during the audition process. At 25 or 26 years old at the time, playing a high school student seemed like a stretch to him. “I know I’ve got good genes, but I just felt like it wasn’t going to happen for me,” he shared, expressing surprise when he was invited to screen test.

Garfield credits his acting coach, Greta Seacat, for giving him the key advice that helped him secure the role. Seacat told him to treat the screen test like it didn’t matter, encouraging a playful, carefree mindset. “She told me to approach it as if I was making a short film with my high school friends,” Garfield explained. “That allowed me to let go of the pressure, to stop trying so hard. It brought me back to a place where I could just be free and emotionally available.”

This mentality shift made all the difference for Garfield, who left his screen test feeling confident. While The Amazing Spider-Man 2 underperformed at the box office, leading to the abrupt end of his Spider-Man stint, Garfield made a triumphant return in 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home. The blockbuster, which grossed $1.9 billion worldwide, united his Spider-Man with Tom Holland’s and Tobey Maguire’s versions of the character.

As for returning to the role in the future, Garfield remains open to the idea, but only if the right opportunity presents itself. “I’d 100% come back if it was something fresh, something that added to the culture in a unique and exciting way,” he told Esquire. “I love that character. It brings people joy, and if I can be part of that, then I’m all in.”
