Sydney Sweeney and Amanda Seyfried to Star in Paul Feig’s Thriller The Housemaid

Lionsgate secures top talent for The Housemaid, with Euphoria’s Sweeney and The Dropout’s Seyfried leading the cast in a chilling tale of dark secrets.

Lionsgate has finalized a deal with Sydney Sweeney and is in the final stages of negotiations with Amanda Seyfried to headline The Housemaid, an adaptation of Freida McFadden’s bestselling thriller. Paul Feig, known for his work on A Simple Favor, has been tapped to direct the project, while Rebecca Sonnenshine handles the screenplay.

Produced by Hidden Pictures’ Todd Lieberman and Carly Kleinbart Elter, the film will see both Sweeney and Seyfried serve as executive producers, alongside Alex Young and McFadden. Feig will also produce through his company, Feigco, with Laura Fischer.

The story centers on Millie, played by Sweeney, a woman struggling to rebuild her life as she takes a job as a housemaid for Nina (Seyfried) and her wealthy husband, Andrew. However, Millie soon discovers that the seemingly perfect couple harbors dangerous secrets, making her fresh start anything but peaceful.

Lionsgate’s Motion Picture Group chair, Adam Fogelson, expressed excitement about the project, saying, “The Housemaid has all the right elements—an exceptional cast, a strong script, and a thrilling story. My past experiences working with Paul and Amanda have been fantastic, and Sydney brings immense talent and complexity to her roles.”

The Housemaid is based on McFadden’s novel, which has enjoyed remarkable success, spending over 75 weeks on the New York Times bestseller list and accumulating over 3.6 million copies sold worldwide. The novel has been translated into 40 languages and boasts a staggering half-billion pages read on Kindle. It’s currently the second most-read title on Kindle’s 10th anniversary list, behind only the Harry Potter series.

Erin Westerman, co-president of Lionsgate Motion Picture Group, echoed the enthusiasm, highlighting the chemistry between the leads: “Sydney Sweeney and Amanda Seyfried are the perfect choices for Millie and Nina. They bring depth and mystery to their characters, leaving the audience guessing.”

The film marks another exciting collaboration between Lionsgate and Paul Feig, who directed A Simple Favor and its upcoming sequel, due in 2025. Feig’s recent success includes the Amazon film Jackpot!, which held the No. 1 spot globally on Amazon for four consecutive weeks.

Sweeney, best known for her Emmy-nominated performances in Euphoria and The White Lotus, has recently starred in Sony’s Anyone But You and the horror film Immaculate. Seyfried, fresh off her Emmy win for her portrayal of Elizabeth Holmes in Hulu’s The Dropout, continues to garner acclaim for her versatility.

With a powerhouse cast, a proven director, and a gripping story, The Housemaid is poised to be one of the most anticipated thrillers of the coming year.
