Veteran actor Mithun Chakraborty has been announced as this year’s recipient of the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award, the highest honor bestowed by the Indian government for contributions to cinema. Chakraborty, a three-time National Award winner, was left speechless upon hearing the news, reflecting on his journey from humble beginnings to becoming one of the most respected figures in Indian cinema. Soon after the announcement, Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended his heartfelt congratulations.
In a conversation with ANI, the actor shared his emotions, stating that his path to success was filled with daily struggles. “Nothing was handed to me on a platter. Every step of my journey was a fight,” he said, dedicating the award to his family and his legion of fans. Recalling his modest upbringing in Kolkata, Chakraborty added, “I never imagined a boy from the footpath could be honored with such a prestigious award.”

Chakraborty, said he was overwhelmed by the recognition. “I’m literally dumbfounded. I can’t even express whether I should smile or cry. It proves what I always tell my fans—if I can make it, anyone can.”
Prime Minister Modi, along with Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, took to social media to praise the actor. In his post, PM Modi called Chakraborty a “cultural icon,” admired across generations for his versatile performances. “Delighted that Shri Mithun Chakraborty Ji has been conferred the Dadasaheb Phalke Award. Congratulations and best wishes to him,” the Prime Minister wrote.
Mithun’s son, Namashi Chakraborty, also expressed his pride, stating that his father’s life journey is a source of inspiration for millions. “He is a self-made superstar, and we are all elated by this magnificent honor,” Namashi told The Indian Express.
The award will be presented to Mithun Chakraborty at the 70th National Film Awards ceremony, scheduled to take place on October 8, 2024.
