Karan Johar Criticizes Sky-High Actor Fees, Saif Ali Khan Responds with a Lighthearted Rebuttal
As Karan Johar questions the value of star salaries in the film industry, Saif Ali Khan emphasizes market demand and business realities, with a dash of humor.

Filmmaker Karan Johar has openly expressed frustration over the excessive fees some actors demand, arguing that their box office performance often doesn’t justify these astronomical numbers. In a recent interview, Johar highlighted how the economics of the industry can’t support such inflated costs, sparking a debate about the sustainability of star salaries.
Actor Saif Ali Khan responded to Johar’s remarks during an interview at the India Today Conclave in Mumbai. Khan acknowledged Johar’s concerns but pointed out that actor fees are determined by market demand and the perceived value they bring to a film’s success. “He wants to cut pay cheques,” Saif quipped. “I think I should start my own union for that. I’m sure he’s right, but it makes me a little nervous when I hear about cutting pay cheques. No cutting pay cheques!” he added with a smile.
Khan elaborated on the industry’s financial dynamics, explaining how stars often set high fees based on their market appeal, and producers are willing to pay if they believe the star can pull in the audience. “The film industry operates as a business hub. Sometimes you go to a star, and they say, ‘If you want me, this is the price.’ And people pay it. Sure, the economics can get skewed, but it’s all part of the risk people take in this business,” Khan said, adding in a lighter tone, “But Karan Johar knows best. I’m just joking.”
The actor also agreed with Johar’s point that some stars charge exorbitant amounts but fail to deliver on their box office promises, which is ultimately unsustainable. “What Karan’s talking about is stars asking for massive amounts of money and then not delivering. That can’t last. But we, we’re recession-proof,” Saif remarked humorously.
In his recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter India, Karan Johar had raised concerns about stars demanding fees that match the entire budget of a film. “What are your last few films? How much did they open to? What gives you the right to ask for this number?” Johar said, pointing out the disparity between actor demands and their box office pull. “If the film’s budget is ₹40 crore and you’re asking for ₹40 crore, how can I pay you? Are you guaranteeing the film will make ₹120 crore? There’s no guarantee.”
