Indian 2 Fails to Impress, Struggles at Box Office and Faces OTT Delays

Kamal Haasan and Shankar’s ambitious sequel underperforms, leading to renegotiations with Netflix over streaming rights

The much-anticipated film “Indian 2,” which brought together the legendary Kamal Haasan and acclaimed director Shankar, has turned out to be a major disappointment at the global box office. Following its poor reception, the film’s OTT release has also been delayed, contrary to earlier speculations about a premature digital debut.

As a follow-up to the 1996 blockbuster “Indian,” the sequel had high expectations, especially after years in production. However, the film was met with negative reviews and failed to attract audiences, resulting in significantly lower box office earnings than anticipated.

Recent figures indicate that “Indian 2” has garnered just 81 crores net at the Indian box office, translating to a gross of 95.58 crores. Overseas, the film managed to collect 51 crores gross, bringing its worldwide total to 146.58 crores gross. This performance is underwhelming, especially against the reported budget of 250 crores, leading to a drastic reduction in its global screenings.

In light of its box office failure, Netflix, which had initially secured the streaming rights for 120 crores, is now demanding a substantial refund from the filmmakers. Track Tollywood reports that the streaming giant, having paid the full amount before the theatrical release, is unwilling to honor the original deal due to the film’s poor reception.

The trend among OTT platforms to finalize deals based on a film’s box office performance is influencing the current standoff between Netflix and the makers of “Indian 2.” As negotiations continue, the film’s digital release remains on hold.
