The Actress Opens Up About Choosing a Different Path Amidst Personal Challenges and Finding Joy in Family Bonds

In a candid revelation, Manisha Koirala, renowned Bollywood actress, shares her journey of acceptance and resilience following her battle with ovarian cancer. Rather than pursuing traditional paths of motherhood, she has found solace and purpose in becoming a godmother.
In her latest role in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Netflix series, “Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar,” Koirala depicted a mother figure in shades of grey, mirroring her own complex emotions towards motherhood. In an interview with NDTV, she reflected on her struggle with infertility, stating, “There are, somewhere, unfinished things in my life. As you grow older, you accept your reality.”
Koirala’s battle with ovarian cancer forced her to confront the possibility of not experiencing biological motherhood. She shared, “It was tough getting ovarian cancer and not being able to be a mother. But I made peace with that.” Despite considering adoption, she realized her own limitations, acknowledging, “I get stressed out very quickly, I get anxiety very quickly.”
Opting for a different path, Koirala embraced the role of a godmother. She expressed, “I’d rather be a godmother. So, I must make do with what I have.” For her, what she has is her aging parents, whom she deeply loves and cherishes. Returning to her hometown of Kathmandu more frequently, she finds joy in spending quality time with them.
In navigating her journey post-cancer, Koirala exemplifies resilience and acceptance, finding fulfillment in unconventional roles and cherished family bonds.
