Chris Pine Expresses Surprise Over DC’s Decision to Cancel Wonder Woman 3

Actor Reflects on the Franchise’s Future and His Role as Steve Trevor

Chris Pine, known for his portrayal of Steve Trevor in the Wonder Woman franchise, recently shared his thoughts on DC’s surprising move to axe the highly anticipated third installment of the superhero saga.

In a conversation with Business Insider, Pine expressed his astonishment at the decision, stating, “I’m stunned that they said no to a billion-dollar franchise and decided to pivot elsewhere.” Despite his surprise, Pine acknowledged that the decision-making process was beyond his purview, emphasizing his admiration for the character and director Patty Jenkins.

Having played the love interest of Gal Gadot’s Diana Prince/Wonder Woman in both 2017’s *Wonder Woman* and 2020’s *Wonder Woman 1984*, Pine clarified that he wouldn’t have been involved in a third film. “Me. No. Homie is dead. Steve is gonzo. It would be ridiculous to try to bring me back,” he asserted, referencing his character’s fate in the franchise.

Reflecting on his initial hesitation to take on the role of Steve Trevor, Pine revealed his conversations with Jenkins, who pitched the film as more than just a superhero narrative. “I had no interest in playing the boyfriend, and it sounded like second fiddle,” Pine explained. “Then, in talking to Patty, the way she described it was, ‘Forget the superhero of it all, this is a romance, this is *Casablanca*, that’s the movie I want to make.’” Pine found this perspective compelling, highlighting the rarity of a superhero film grounded in a love story.

The cancellation of *Wonder Woman 3* came as part of a larger restructuring within DC Studios, spearheaded by James Gunn and Peter Safran, signaling a shift in the direction of the DC Comics Extended Universe.
