Music Copyright Dispute Casts Shadow Over Rajinikanth and Lokesh Kanagaraj’s “Coolie”

Alleged unauthorized use of Ilaiyaraaja’s song triggers legal battle ahead of the film’s production

Rajinikanth and director Lokesh Kanagaraj’s upcoming project, “Coolie,” the 171st venture for the iconic actor, has hit a legal snag. Amidst the excitement following the release of the title promo, the film finds itself embroiled in a copyright dispute over music.

The controversy erupted when composer Ilaiyaraaja claimed his copyrights were violated in the title promo of “Coolie.” Specifically, the unauthorized use of his song “Va Va Pakkam Vaa” from the film “Pramo” without his consent has stirred uproar among fans and the wider public.

Addressing the press outside Chennai International Airport, Rajinikanth weighed in on the matter, urging the producers and music maestro to resolve the issue internally. However, Ilaiyaraaja has already served a copyright notice to the production house, signaling potential legal ramifications for the “Coolie” team.

In his statement, Ilaiyaraaja demanded either full consent for the song’s use or its removal from promotional material, threatening legal action if his terms were not met.

Despite the legal dispute, Anirudh Ravichander is still credited with composing the film’s soundtrack, set to commence production in June. However, details regarding the cast and crew remain undisclosed by the producers.

Contrary to speculation, “Coolie” will not be integrated into the Lokesh Cinematic Universe but will stand as an independent project. Scheduled for release in 2025, the film’s journey to the big screen seems to be navigating through legal turbulence.
