Indie Film “Chalino” Poised to Illuminate the Life of Legendary Musician Rosalino Sánchez Félix

David Castañeda Nears Deal for Lead Role in Long-Awaited Biopic

For years, the Latino Hollywood scene has been abuzz with anticipation for a biopic on the life of Chalino Sanchez, and finally, the project is gaining traction.

Titled “Chalino,” the upcoming indie film aims to chronicle the extraordinary journey of Rosalino Sánchez Félix, affectionately known as Chalino or “El Rey del Corrido,” a figure revered as an antihero in the realm of Narcocorridos, a subgenre of Regional music.

Sources have disclosed to Deadline that David Castañeda, renowned for his roles in “The Umbrella Academy” and “Ballerina,” has emerged as the frontrunner for the lead role after an extensive audition process. While negotiations are reportedly in progress, no official agreement has been reached yet. The production team is eyeing a commencement of filming later this year.

The genesis of this indie venture dates back to the 2020 Sundance Screenwriters and Directors Labs, where Jesus Celaya, the writer, earned the prestigious Latinx Fellowship for his script. Celaya, who also serves as the director, crafted the narrative around Chalino’s life, with a focus on authenticity and reverence. The film promises to feature Chalino’s iconic music, a testament to his enduring legacy.

Hailing from Sinaloa, Chalino’s upbringing was marred by the pervasive violence of the region. His relocation to Los Angeles marked a turning point, propelling him into the realm of music where he unwittingly carved a niche for himself. Despite not being renowned for his vocal prowess, Chalino’s raw lyrics resonated deeply with audiences, earning him a devoted following among the masses. However, his association with the criminal underworld of Southern California cast a shadow over his success, necessitating him to carry a gun for protection.

While Chalino found fame, he also found adversaries. Tragically, his life was cut short in 1992 during a performance in his hometown, with his murder remaining unsolved to this day, shrouded in speculation and conspiracy.

Castañeda’s portrayal of complex characters in films such as “The Tax Collector” and “Sicario: Day of the Soldado” has primed him for the role of Chalino. His diverse repertoire, coupled with his personal background—a Los Angeles native with roots in Sinaloa—adds depth to his portrayal.

In addition to his cinematic endeavors, Castañeda’s upcoming projects include “Ballerina,” a female-led spinoff of “John Wick,” and “Trap House,” where he stars alongside Dave Bautista and Bobby Cannavale, promising audiences a captivating performance in “Chalino” and beyond.
