Manoj Bajpayee’s Birthday Reflects on Past Opportunities in Bollywood’s Classic

An Inside Look at Manoj Bajpayee’s Decision to Decline a Role in Devdas

As Manoj Bajpayee gears up to celebrate his 55th birthday on April 23, it’s a moment to reflect on his journey in the Indian film industry. One notable episode in his career harks back to the time when renowned director Sanjay Leela Bhansali approached him for a pivotal role in the epic romance, Devdas.

Bajpayee, celebrated for his roles in cinematic gems, was considered for the character of Chunnilal, a significant role in the narrative. However, the actor, known for his powerhouse performances, opted out of the project. While the role eventually went to Jackie Shroff, Bajpayee’s decision stemmed from his dedication to leading roles, as reported by News18.

In an interview with ETimes, Bajpayee expressed his long-standing desire to portray the titular character, Devdas, in a film adaptation. Despite his admiration for the story and its characters, he prioritized lead roles over supporting ones, which led to his decline of Bhansali’s offer.

Devdas, based on Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay’s novel, is a poignant tale of love and societal divides set in the early 1900s. Bhansali’s adaptation starred Aishwarya Rai as Paro, Madhuri Dixit as Chandramukhi, and Shah Rukh Khan in the titular role, capturing the essence of the Bengali classic on screen. While Bajpayee’s journey in Bollywood took different turns, his commitment to his craft and his aspirations continue to shape his illustrious career.
