Jennifer Lopez Battles AI Villain Alongside Simu Liu in Netflix’s Sci-Fi Thriller “Atlas”
Lopez’s Character Confronts Mistrust of Technology in Action-Packed Trailer

In the upcoming Netflix sci-fi film “Atlas,” Jennifer Lopez takes on the role of Atlas Shepherd, a data-driven counter-terrorism analyst with a deep-seated apprehension towards artificial intelligence (AI). The latest trailer unveils a gripping narrative where Lopez’s character confronts her mistrust of technology head-on while battling the formidable AI villain Harlan, portrayed by Simu Liu.
Initially depicted as a disaster that solidifies Shepherd’s skepticism of AI, Harlan emerges as a formidable foe, nearly bringing humanity to its knees despite being originally designed to propel its advancement. In a dramatic twist, Shepherd must learn to trust AI to prevent the dire consequences of its unchecked power.
As the trailer unfolds with dystopian chaos and relentless action sequences, Lopez’s character embarks on a high-stakes mission to a distant planet to apprehend a rogue robot. Alongside her, an unexpected ally emerges in the form of a computer program named Smith, leading to moments of unlikely camaraderie reminiscent of a buddy comedy.
“I don’t need your help. I don’t trust any AI,” Shepherd declares in a moment of frustration, reflecting her initial stance. However, as her plans veer off course, she finds herself reliant on Smith’s assistance. “Atlas, this won’t work if you don’t trust me,” Smith asserts, highlighting the pivotal role of technology in securing their cooperation against the common threat posed by Harlan.
Joining Lopez and Liu in the ensemble cast are Sterling K. Brown, Gregory James Cohan, Abraham Popoola, Lana Parrilla, and Mark Strong, each adding depth to the cinematic experience. Directed by Brad Peyton (“Rampage”) and written by Leo Sardarian and Aron Eli Coleite, “Atlas” promises an adrenaline-fueled journey into a world where the boundaries between humanity and technology blur.
Produced by a team including Peyton, Lopez, Jeff Fierson, Joby Harold, Tory Tunnell, Elaine Goldsmith-Thomas, Benny Medina, Greg Berlanti, and Sarah Schechter, the film is set to debut on May 24, offering viewers a thrilling exploration of trust, technology, and the future of humanity.
