Henry Cavill Reflects on Superman Exit Amid Post-Credits Scene Banter

The actor playfully hints at his departure from the iconic role while discussing past cinematic ventures.

During the introduction of Guy Ritchie’s latest film, “The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare,” Henry Cavill added a dash of humor to his remarks, indirectly addressing his departure from the Superman franchise. The actor, known for his roles in Ritchie’s films like “The Man from U.N.C.L.E.” and an appearance in the post-credits scene of “King Arthur: Legend of the Sword” in 2017, joked about his luck with such scenes.

“Seems like I don’t have much success with post-credit scenes,” Cavill quipped, as reported by Business Insider. “Maybe it’s time to give up on those.”

His cameo in “King Arthur: Legend of the Sword” was initially intended to pave the way for a more substantial role in a sequel. However, the film’s underperformance at the box office led to the sequel’s cancellation. But this reference wasn’t the only nod to his cinematic journey – Cavill’s return as Superman in the post-credits scene of “Black Adam” in 2022 marked a significant moment, his first reprisal of the role since “Justice League” in 2017.

“I’m thrilled to confirm: I’m donning the cape again as Superman,” Cavill had announced via social media in October 2022. “Thank you for your unwavering support and patience. Your faith will be rewarded.” Yet, shortly after this declaration, the reins of the DC Extended Universe (DCEU) changed hands, with James Gunn and Peter Safran taking charge, prompting a massive restructuring at the studio. Plans for a new Superman movie, helmed by Gunn as part of DCU Chapter One: Gods and Monsters, emerged, but to the dismay of fans, Cavill’s involvement was uncertain.

“After a discussion with James Gunn and Peter Safran, I’ve got some bittersweet news to share,” he expressed on Instagram. “Unfortunately, I won’t be donning the cape again as Superman. Despite the studio’s earlier directive to announce my return, circumstances have shifted since their appointment. It’s not an easy pill to swallow, but that’s the way the cookie crumbles.”
