Ncuti Gatwa Shares Insights on Acceptance and Love Amid Backlash

Doctor Who Star Opens Up About Overcoming Expectations and Embracing Self-Worth

Ncuti Gatwa, known for his role as the first Black lead on Doctor Who, is speaking candidly about his journey towards self-acceptance amidst criticism.

In a recent interview with Attitude magazine, Gatwa delved into his evolving understanding of self-worth and the pressure to meet unrealistic standards. Reflecting on societal expectations, Gatwa remarked, “We’re trained to be like, ‘If I’m not exceptional, I won’t be loved.’ Certainly, I think that was my thing. So, yeah, I think I’m just learning now like, ‘Oh, you are allowed to be loved.’ You don’t have to be excellent or aspire to that term, ‘Black excellence’. What the hell?”

He went on to highlight the disparities in recognition between white and Black individuals, noting the need for Black excellence to be celebrated while white mediocrity often receives acclaim. Gatwa expressed his gradual realization that everyone deserves love simply for existing, leading to a deeper sense of compassion within himself.

Addressing the backlash surrounding his casting as The Doctor, Gatwa expressed bewilderment at the intensity of some reactions. However, he acknowledged it as part of the broader shift towards diversity in the entertainment industry. Gatwa observed, “We do see a shift happening in casting, in positions of power and in the status quo. I mean, not a fast shift, things could tip over the other way a little bit quicker, but you see people kind of malfunctioning because things are changing.”

Despite external pressures, Gatwa remains focused on his portrayal of the fifteenth Doctor, emphasizing his commitment to the character’s essence as a compassionate alien scientist. In a previous interview with The Hollywood Reporter, he noted the need to block out negativity from the media and stay true to the character’s ethos.

As anticipation builds for the debut of Season 14 of Doctor Who, featuring Gatwa in his first season as the titular character, the actor’s insights serve as a poignant reminder of the importance of self-love and acceptance in the face of adversity.
