Warner Bros. Announces Fifth Matrix Movie with New Director

Drew Goddard Takes the Helm as Warner Bros. Revives Iconic Franchise sans Wachowski Sisters

Warner Bros. has officially greenlit the return to the Matrix universe with the announcement of a fifth movie installment. Departing from the familiar direction of Lana and Lily Wachowski, the studio has entrusted the filmmaking reins to Drew Goddard, acclaimed for his work on “The Martian.” Goddard, alongside Sarah Esberg, will write, produce, and direct the new chapter, while Lana Wachowski remains attached as an executive producer.

The casting remains shrouded in mystery, leaving fans to wonder whether Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss will reprise their iconic roles as Neo and Trinity. The recent addition of Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Jonathan Groff, Neil Patrick Harris, and Priyanka Chopra Jonas to the Matrix universe further intensifies speculation about the upcoming cast lineup.

Plot details are tightly under wraps, but Warner Bros. Motion Pictures president of production, Jesse Ehrman, hints at a narrative that will evolve the fantastical world of the Matrix while preserving its core essence, which captivated audiences worldwide.

“Drew came to Warner Bros. with a new idea that we all believe would be an incredible way to continue the Matrix world, by both honoring what Lana and Lilly began over 25 years ago and offering a unique perspective based on his own love of the series and characters,” said Ehrman in a statement. “The entire team at Warner Bros. Discovery is thrilled for Drew to be making this new ‘Matrix’ film, adding his vision to the cinematic canon the Wachowskis’ spent a quarter of a century building here at the studio.”

Goddard, renowned for his Oscar-nominated work on “The Martian,” expressed profound gratitude for the opportunity to contribute to the Matrix saga, citing Lana and Lilly’s influence as a constant source of inspiration.

“It is not hyperbole to say ‘The Matrix’ films changed both cinema and my life,” Goddard said. “Lana and Lilly’s exquisite artistry inspires me on a daily basis, and I am beyond grateful for the chance to tell stories in their world.”

“The Matrix,” originating in 1999, remains a seminal work in science fiction, spawning three sequels: “The Matrix Reloaded,” “The Matrix Revolutions,” and the latest, “The Matrix Resurrections,” released in 2021. However, the fourth installment, directed solely by Lana Wachowski after an 18-year hiatus, faced significant challenges at the box office. Despite its monumental influence, “The Matrix Resurrections” struggled financially, partly attributed to Warner Bros.’ unprecedented decision to debut its 2021 slate simultaneously on HBO Max. With a worldwide gross of just $159 million against a $190 million budget, it fell short of expectations.
