Vipul Amrutlal Shah Reflects on Action Replayy: A Lesson in Directorial Missteps

In the wake of the triumph of “Housefull,” the unveiling of Akshay Kumar’s role in the upcoming film “Action Replayy” sparked anticipation among fans. However, Director Vipul Amrutlal Shah harbored a growing sense of detachment from the project’s reception by audiences. In an exclusive interview with Vaad, Vipul divulged that during the creative process of shaping Akshay’s character, Kishen Kumar Chopra, the actor expressed reservations regarding Vipul’s vision.
Speaking candidly in Hindi, Vipul Amrutlal Shah admitted to having directed only one comedy with Akshay Kumar, “Action Replayy,” which unfortunately failed to strike a chord with audiences. Reflecting on this, he humbly acknowledged, “I realized that as a director, I lacked the finesse required to helm a period film. This was solely my shortcoming and no one else’s. It was my directorial failure.” Moreover, he attributed a portion of the film’s lackluster performance at the box office to Akshay’s portrayal in the movie.
“Initially, there were significant flaws in Akshay’s appearance, and Akshay himself cautioned me, saying, ‘Vipul, you’re taking this experiment too far,'” he revealed. Despite the actor’s reservations, Vipul persisted with his vision. “Akshay always stands by the director’s vision, so I must take accountability for it. Despite his concerns, I insisted on that appearance,” he elaborated.
Vipul acknowledged that the unconventional appearance of the actor, characterized by unique dental prosthetics and hairstyle, deterred audiences from flocking to theaters, contributing to the film’s lack of traction upon release.
However, he noted a remarkable shift in the film’s reception when it aired on television. “When the film was broadcast on satellite, it became Akshay’s highest-rated film at that time. Such phenomena are not uncommon. Audiences can sometimes disconnect over minor details,” he remarked. Vipul emphasized the unpredictable nature of audience reactions, underscoring that upon its initial release, viewers failed to resonate with Akshay’s appearance.
Set in the 1970s, “Action Replayy” also starred Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Aditya Roy Kapoor. Despite its catchy music, the film failed to win over both critics and audiences, earning the label of a commercial and critical letdown.
