Iconic Ghazal Maestro Pankaj Udhas Passes Away at 72

Renowned ghazal singer Pankaj Udhas, known for his soul-stirring melodies, has passed away after battling a prolonged illness, as confirmed by his family on February 26th, 2024.
In an official statement, his family expressed profound sorrow, announcing, “It is with heavy hearts that we share the news of the demise of the esteemed Padmashri Pankaj Udhas on February 26th, 2024, following a prolonged illness.”
The news of Udhas’ passing sent shockwaves through the music industry, with fellow artist Sonu Nigam mourning the loss on Instagram. Nigam reminisced, “A significant part of my childhood fades away today. Shri Pankaj Udhas ji, your absence will forever echo. My heart weeps at the thought of your departure. Thank you for your presence. Om Shanti.”
Born on May 17, 1951, in Jetpur, Gujarat, Pankaj Udhas initiated his musical journey with the release of the ghazal album “Aahat” in 1980. Swiftly rising to prominence, he became synonymous with ghazal music in India. His contribution to Bollywood included the unforgettable rendition of “Chitthi Aayee Hai” for the film “Naam,” starring Sanjay Dutt.
Throughout his illustrious career, Udhas released numerous albums and graced countless stages with his mesmerizing performances. His talent was duly recognized with prestigious accolades, including the Filmfare Award for Best Male Playback Singer and the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for Ghazal Singing. Udhas was also honored with the Padma Shri, India’s fourth-highest civilian award.
Udhas’ elder brother, Manhar Udhas, a successful playback singer himself, played a pivotal role in nurturing Pankaj’s musical talents.
While Udhas initially explored singing for Hindi films and Indian pop, his true passion lay in the poetic realm of ghazals.
His legacy will be eternally cherished through timeless ghazals such as “Chandani Raat Mein,” “Na Kajre Ki Dhaar,” “Aur Ahista Kijiye Baatein,” “Ek Taraf Uska Ghar,” and “Thodi Thodi Piya Karo.”
Reportedly, Udhas breathed his last around 11 am at Breach Candy Hospital. His final rites are scheduled for February 27th. He is survived by his wife Farida Udhas, daughters Nayaab and Reva Udhas, and brothers Nirmal and Manhar Udhas, both acclaimed singers in their own right.
