Alejandro G. Iñárritu Teams Up with Tom Cruise for Mystery Warner Bros. Project

Insider sources have disclosed to Deadline that Warner Bros. and Legendary Entertainment are currently in discussions for an unnamed film helmed by Alejandro G. Iñárritu, starring none other than Tom Cruise. This collaboration signifies a significant return to English-language cinema for Iñárritu since his acclaimed 2015 hit, “The Revenant.”

Under Iñárritu’s direction, the film is set to feature a fresh screenplay co-written in 2023 alongside Sabina Berman, as well as Alexander Dinelaris and Nicolas Giacobone, his collaborators from “Birdman,” reuniting a decade later. Cruise, in addition to his acting role, will also serve as a producer, marking his inaugural project following the recent announcement of his partnership with Warner Bros. It is anticipated that Legendary will also join as a production partner.

The project is shrouded in secrecy, with plot details tightly under wraps, save for the fact that it’s an original narrative penned by Iñárritu himself. Recent reports suggest that the Oscar-winning director has been engaging in confidential discussions with a select few actors, with Cruise being among the first. Eager to embark on his next cinematic venture, Cruise wasted no time in securing a meeting with Iñárritu upon learning of the director’s new studio endeavor. Following their discussion, Cruise promptly pledged his commitment to the project.

This endeavor aligns with the vision shared by Cruise, Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav, and WB studio executives Michael De Luca and Pam Abdy following Cruise’s strategic partnership announcement, particularly emphasizing the creation of original content tailored for global theatrical experiences.

For Iñárritu, this film represents his return to major studio filmmaking since his directorial triumph with “The Revenant,” a box office success exceeding $500 million worldwide and garnering him his second consecutive Best Director Oscar. Following a brief hiatus post-“Birdman,” during which he focused on his passion project “Bardo” at Netflix, Iñárritu deferred his next major studio undertaking until now, after toying with various ideas in 2019.

As for Cruise, renowned for his blockbuster franchises like “Mission: Impossible” and the upcoming “Top Gun: Maverick,” collaborating with esteemed directors has been a recurring theme throughout his career, including luminaries such as Stanley Kubrick and Paul Thomas Anderson. While an Oscar has eluded Cruise thus far, his association with Iñárritu, known for elevating performances to award-worthy levels, could undoubtedly capture the attention of Academy voters upon the film’s eventual release.
