Gina Carano Sues Disney and Lucasfilm Over Firing from “The Mandalorian”

In a recent development, Gina Carano, a former cast member of the hit series “The Mandalorian,” has filed a lawsuit against Disney and Lucasfilm for her termination in 2021. The lawsuit, lodged in a California federal court, asserts claims of wrongful termination and discrimination. Carano seeks not only reinstatement but also punitive damages totaling a minimum of $75,000.
Backing Carano’s legal battle is tech mogul Elon Musk, who pledged support for individuals facing discrimination due to social media posts. Although Carano’s controversial remarks originated from her Instagram Stories, Musk’s company, X Corp., has pledged financial backing for her lawsuit. Joe Benarroch, head of business operations at X Corp., emphasized the company’s commitment to free speech and combating bullying and harassment.

After my 20 years of building a career from scratch, and during the regime of former Disney CEO Bob Chapek, Lucasfilm made this statement on Twitter, terminating me from The Mandalorian: “Gina…
Carano, known for her role as Cara Dune, faced swift backlash following a social media post drawing parallels between being a Republican and being Jewish during the Holocaust. The contentious post, shared in February 2021, ignited controversy, prompting Lucasfilm and Carano’s agency, UTA, to sever ties with her. Notably, UTA is not named as a defendant in the lawsuit, although Carano alleges Disney’s culpability in her agency’s decision.
The lawsuit contends that Disney and Lucasfilm enforced a singular ideology, stifling dissent and differing perspectives. Carano’s legal team draws attention to previous social media posts by other “Star Wars” actors, including Pedro Pascal and Mark Hamill, which compared President Donald Trump and his supporters to Adolf Hitler and Nazis. Carano argues that the selective enforcement of policies, without consequences for male co-stars’ political statements, constitutes discrimination on the part of Disney.
In essence, Carano’s legal action against Disney and Lucasfilm marks a significant challenge to the entertainment industry’s handling of social media controversies and raises pertinent questions about freedom of expression and workplace discrimination.
