HBO Renews Julian Fellowes’ The Gilded Age for a Third Season Following Stellar Ratings

In the wake of the December 17th finale, HBO has officially given the green light for a third season of Julian Fellowes’ acclaimed series, The Gilded Age. The decision to renew the period drama was influenced by its robust viewership, with a consistent growth in total premiere-night viewing over six consecutive weeks, culminating in a series high for the Season 2 finale.
Francesca Orsi, EVP of HBO Programming and Head of HBO Drama Series and Films, expressed pride in the show’s achievements, stating, “We’re so proud of what Julian Fellowes and The Gilded Age family have achieved. From the costumes to the production design and performances, the show has captivated so many week after week. Along with our partners at Universal Television, we are thrilled to continue this grand tale for a third season.”
The Gilded Age faced scrutiny earlier when HBO was evaluating viewership relative to budget for several series, including The Gilded Age, Perry Mason, and Winning Time. However, the strong performance of The Gilded Age, coupled with its Production Design Emmy win for the first season, solidified its position for renewal.
Season 2 of The Gilded Age, set in 1883 on Easter morning, continues the gripping narrative. Bertha Russell challenges the old social order, George Russell confronts labor issues in his steel plant, Marian seeks her place in the world, and Ada embarks on a surprising courtship. The cast includes notable names such as Carrie Coon, Christine Baranski, Cynthia Nixon, and many more.
Julian Fellowes, the creator, writer, and executive producer of The Gilded Age, remains at the helm, supported by an impressive team of executive producers. The series, a co-production between HBO and Universal Television, has proven itself as a captivating and enduring tale of societal upheaval in the Gilded Age.
