Adam Driver Unveils Original Kylo Ren Arc, Exposing Unexpected Shift in Star Wars Redemption Plot

In a surprising revelation, Adam Driver has shared insights into the initial trajectory planned for Kylo Ren in the Star Wars saga, disclosing that the redemption arc in “The Rise of Skywalker” was not part of the original plan.
Speaking on The Rich Eisen Show, Driver explained, “[JJ Abrams] had an overall arc in mind, which then changed. His idea was almost the opposite journey of Vader.” The actor detailed Abrams’ vision, contrasting it with Darth Vader’s progression, stating that Kylo Ren was initially meant to start as the most confused and vulnerable, evolving to become the most committed to the dark side by the trilogy’s end. However, this plan underwent a significant transformation.
The pivotal shift occurred with “The Last Jedi,” directed by Rian Johnson, which altered the character’s trajectory. Driver clarified, “With Rian, he took it into a different direction, but [it] still tracked with the character.” The final twist solidified in “The Rise of Skywalker,” focusing on the bond between Kylo Ren and Rey. Driver emphasized that the evolution into Ben Solo was never part of the original plan, despite being a poignant highlight of the sequel trilogy.
Kylo Ren’s redemption, particularly the emotional reunion with Han Solo, struck a chord with audiences, though the actor acknowledged the appeal of a fully dark side Kylo Ren. The unexpected twist added depth to the character, deviating from the initial concept.
Looking ahead, the Star Wars universe continues with “Skeleton Crew” and “The Acolyte” on Disney Plus, with no release dates confirmed at this time.
