Iconic Duo Returns: Jackie Chan and Ralph Macchio to Star in New ‘Karate Kid’ Movie

In an exciting development for fans of the classic “Karate Kid” franchise, martial arts legends Jackie Chan and Ralph Macchio are set to team up for a brand new movie under the Sony Pictures banner. Directed by Jonathan Entwistle and written by Rob Lieber, the film is scheduled to hit theaters on December 13, 2024, with seasoned producer Karen Rosenfelt at the helm.
While specific plot details remain tightly guarded, it has been confirmed that Ralph Macchio will reprise his iconic role as Daniel LaRusso, a character he first portrayed in the original “Karate Kid” trilogy back in 1984. Macchio has continued to breathe life into Daniel through Netflix’s successful “Cobra Kai” series, which recently announced its sixth and final season. On the other hand, Jackie Chan will return as Mr. Han, a kung fu master reminiscent of Mr. Miyagi, who coached Jaden Smith’s Dre Parker in the 2010 remake.
The announcement, made through a video posted on YouTube by Chan and Macchio, also revealed a global casting search for a new karate kid to lead the film. Aspiring young actors are encouraged to submit audition tapes to KarateKidCasting.com, adding an element of anticipation to the project.
The sprawling narrative of “Cobra Kai,” set several decades after the original films, has captivated audiences, reigniting the rivalry between the middle-aged Daniel LaRusso and Johnny Lawrence, played by William Zabka. It remains uncertain how the events of “Cobra Kai” will intertwine with the storyline of the upcoming “Karate Kid” movie.
Since its debut in 1984, the “Karate Kid” franchise has solidified its place as one of Hollywood’s most beloved sports sagas, giving rise to the Emmy-nominated “Cobra Kai” series and amassing over $430 million at the global box office.
