Vicky and Vidya Ka Wo Wala Video: A Comedy That Starts Strong but Fizzles Out

Rajkummar Rao and Triptii Dimri Shine in a Spirited Start, but the Plot Gets Lost in Unnecessary Subplots and a Bizarre Twist

If something seems too good to be true, it probably is—a saying that seems to echo through life and, apparently, through the storyline of Vicky and Vidya Ka Wo Wala Video. This comedy starts off like a thrilling roller coaster, full of excitement, but eventually crashes when the brakes fail, leaving the audience wanting more coherence and less chaos.

Set in Rishikesh in 1997, the film introduces us to Vicky (Rajkummar Rao), a witty mehendi artist, and Vidya (Triptii Dimri), an MBBS graduate. Their romance blossoms, and they soon marry. Eschewing their family’s traditional gift of a pilgrimage to Vaishno Devi, the couple opts for a honeymoon in Goa. Things take a bizarre turn when Vicky, inspired by a newspaper article claiming American couples who document their intimacy have happier marriages, convinces Vidya to record their own private moments. However, the following day, their house is burglarized, and their TV system, along with the intimate tape, is stolen.

What begins as an endearing narrative quickly derails as the story gets bogged down by unnecessary subplots. These include a housekeeper falling for Vijay Raaz’s character, a local politician using sex tapes for leverage, a family heirloom sword, and an overzealous photographer involved in an absurd romance. The plot becomes so convoluted that the central storyline feels lost, and by the end, you’re left just waiting for someone to find the stolen CD so the film can wrap up.

The movie’s biggest misstep comes when it brings back the specter from Stree, the horror-comedy in which Rajkummar Rao also played a character named Vicky. This supernatural twist feels forced and out of place in the otherwise lighthearted setting, and it fails to add anything of value to the story. In fact, it only distracts from the film’s original charm.

Despite a promising start and strong performances by the cast, particularly Archana Puran Singh in an underutilized role, Vicky and Vidya Ka Wo Wala Video ultimately wastes its potential by trying to do too much. Instead of sticking to its comedic roots, it ventures into confusing territory, leaving the audience disappointed.
