Kiran Rao Reflects on the Convergence of OTT and Cinema in India’s Evolving Entertainment Landscape

The ‘Laapataa Ladies’ director discusses the diminishing distinctions between streaming platforms and traditional films, expressing concerns over creative stagnation in the industry.

In a recent discussion, acclaimed filmmaker Kiran Rao observed that the distinction between content on over-the-top (OTT) platforms and traditional cinema in India has significantly narrowed. She noted that projects achieving success on OTT platforms are increasingly mirroring those that perform well in theaters. Rao expressed concern that the initial creative freedom and innovation that characterized the early days of India’s OTT scene, which began nearly a decade ago, have diminished over time. She described the OTT space as a “golden egg” that once fostered creative dreams but now faces challenges in fulfilling its initial promise.

“There’s immense potential and numerous stories waiting to be told,” Rao stated. “However, it’s uncertain how many are being commissioned and whether current economics support them. While we still witness some excellent writing on Indian OTT platforms, much more remains to be explored.”

Regarding her future projects, Rao revealed that she has conceptualized a couple of series, including a miniseries, but none have received official approval yet. She often contemplates adapting these series ideas into films, reflecting her uncertainty about the direction she wishes to pursue.

Rao’s latest directorial venture, “Laapataa Ladies,” was released on March 1, 2024. The film garnered positive reviews for its storytelling and performances, winning Best Film (Critics’ Choice) at the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne. It was also selected as India’s official entry for the Best International Feature Film category at the 97th Academy Awards, though it did not secure a nomination. The selection sparked controversy, with some critics arguing that another film, “All We Imagine as Light,” was a more deserving candidate.

“Laapataa Ladies” is a comedy-drama that tells the story of two young brides who are mistakenly swapped during a train journey to their husbands’ homes. The film was screened at the 48th Toronto International Film Festival before its theatrical release and is now available for streaming on Netflix.

As the Indian entertainment industry continues to evolve, Rao’s insights highlight the ongoing challenges and opportunities within both OTT platforms and traditional cinema.
