Ayushmann Khurrana’s Thamma Sets Diwali Box Office Ablaze with Record-Breaking Opening

The actor’s first Diwali release earns over ₹24 crore on day one, marking the biggest opening of his career and a powerful new chapter in the Maddock Horror Comedy Universe.

Ayushmann Khurrana, known for pushing cinematic boundaries with films like Bala, Andhadhun, Article 15, and Shubh Mangal Saavdhan, has once again proved his knack for unconventional choices. With Thamma, his first-ever Diwali release, Ayushmann has scored the biggest opening of his career, earning around ₹24–25 crore (net) on its opening day at the Indian box office.

Overwhelmed by the audience’s response, Ayushmann said, “I’m an entertainer, so it brings me immense joy to see people loving and enjoying Thamma and my performance during these big Diwali holidays. When producer Dinesh Vijan told me the film would release on Diwali, I was thrilled—it’s something I had always wished for.”

Calling Thamma the “tentpole film” of his career, he added, “Every year, I used to go to theatres with my family to watch a superstar’s Diwali release. Today, I’ve gone to the theatres to watch my film with my family. It feels incredible!”

The actor also shared that the film’s success is “a validation of my journey in Hindi cinema.” He thanked Dinesh Vijan for trusting him with a unique character “with no reference point—an Indian ‘Betal’,” referring to the mythological inspiration behind his supernatural role. “To see people enjoying this joyride in theatres and connecting with something so experimental is truly an insane feeling,” he said.

Directed by Aditya Sarpotdar and produced by Maddock Films, Thamma stars Ayushmann Khurrana alongside Rashmika Mandanna and Nawazuddin Siddiqui. The film blends horror, comedy, and mythology—introducing a fresh concept of “Beetalism,” a new twist in the Maddock Horror Comedy Universe.

Released on October 21, 2025, Thamma continues to perform strongly through the Diwali weekend, crossing ₹50 crore within three days. Trade analysts note that this marks one of the best openings for any film in Maddock’s horror-comedy lineup, surpassing expectations and challenging the notion that only sequels or traditional star vehicles succeed during festival seasons.

For Ayushmann, Thamma signifies more than just a box office milestone—it’s a reaffirmation of his belief that originality and risk-taking can coexist with mainstream success. As the film continues to attract family audiences and younger viewers alike, it may well set the tone for how Indian cinema blends mythology with modern storytelling in the years ahead.

With Thamma, Ayushmann Khurrana has delivered a perfect Diwali blockbuster—ambitious, entertaining, and refreshingly different. It cements his status as a risk-taker who dares to redefine stardom while keeping audiences hooked. The opening fireworks have been spectacular—now all eyes are on how bright this flame continues to burn.
