Introduction:

After a shocker cliffhanger of a first season, House of The Dragon is back with the aftermath of a dragon ‘accident’ that led to the death of Lucerys Velaryon. The trailer seemed pretty promising with a similar GOT-esque vibe.

Whether the season stands up to our expectations of viewers is to be seen over a few weeks as we will get one episode per week. The show releases on HBO, in India, you can see it with a subscription on JioCinema. Stay tuned as we cover each of these episodes, bit by bit!

In Episode 1, the looming threat of winter begins to creep in, as Jace visits the Starks to negotiate their support. Lord Cregan Stark(Tom Taylor) is torn between his duty to the North and the realm’s impending civil war, highlighting the stark divide in loyalties.

The Hightowers tighten their grip on the throne, with Jace urging Stark to join their cause. However, news of Lucerys’ death, delivered by a raven from Dragonstone, shifts priorities. Rhaenys attempts to dissuade Daemon from seeking immediate revenge on Vhagar, reminding him that Rhaenyra is still grieving. Daemon, however, blames Rhaenys for not killing Alicent when she could, fueling his desire for vengeance.

Rhaenyra, heartbroken, mourns Lucerys as she finds his charred remains. Lord Corlys, determined to lead the charge, is given a sword intended for Lucerys, deepening his resolve. Meanwhile, the Hightower family braces for conflict, with Ser Criston Cole continuing his secret affair with Alicent, who laments their relationship’s toll on her conscience.

Aemond’s marriage pact with the Stormlands strengthens their position. King Aegon II’s flippant demeanor contrasts sharply with the gravity of the situation, as Alicent struggles to maintain control.

Alicent and Otto discuss the misinterpreted wishes of Viserys, with Alicent fearing she’s losing influence over her sons. Meanwhile, Daemon proposes a deal with The White Worm, seeking information in exchange for freedom. He plans to use a Ratcatcher within the Hightower walls to assassinate Aemond, setting a dark and dangerous plot into motion.

The episode’s climax sees a tragic case of mistaken identity, with assassins killing the wrong prince, adding layers of grief and fury. Halaena informs Alicent of the tragic mistake, heightening the tension and impending conflict.

The return of House of the Dragon couldn’t be more timely, delivering an intense and layered premiere. The episode deftly balances character development with escalating tension, making it a gripping reintroduction to the series.

The nuanced portrayal of alliances and enmities, especially within the Hightower and Targaryen factions, sets the stage for the impending war. The characters’ multifaceted motivations and the unfolding power struggle are compelling, drawing us deeper into the narrative.

Alicent’s moment of respect for Lucerys and the tragic mistake of the assassins underscore the themes of grief and revenge that drive the episode. The final scenes, charged with foreboding, promise more turmoil in future episodes. This episode lays a solid foundation for the season, leaving us eagerly anticipating the next chapter in this epic saga.
