Will Smith Opens Up About Seven-Year Separation from Jada Pinkett Smith and Her Forthcoming Memoir “Worthy”
In a candid revelation, Will Smith has broken his silence and shared his thoughts on his seven-year separation from his wife, Jada Pinkett Smith, and her upcoming memoir, “Worthy.”
In a recent in-depth interview with the New York Times, Jada openly discusses the revelations contained in her forthcoming book, which delves into her past struggles with suicidal thoughts, depression, her use of hallucinogens to explore her mental health, and the unique dynamics of her marriage with Will.
The memoir provides a raw and unfiltered exploration of the inner demons Jada has battled over the years, prompting Will Smith to reflect on his wife’s strength. In an email to the New York Times, the Oscar-winning actor shared his feelings, stating, “When you’ve been with someone for more than half of your life, a sort of emotional blindness sets in. You can all too easily lose your sensitivity to their hidden nuances and subtle beauties.”
Just last week, the 52-year-old actress sat down with Today’s Hoda Kotb for an intimate discussion about her forthcoming memoir. During the NBC News prime-time special, Jada revealed numerous shocking revelations from her book, including the state of her marriage to Will. She disclosed that she and Will have been separated for seven years, clarifying, “Yes, it was not a divorce on paper, but it was a divorce.”
Jada also emphasized that she and Will, who is 55 years old, have been living “completely separate lives” since 2016, despite never officially divorcing. Over the years, rumors circulated about the couple, leading Jada to comment, “I can definitely understand why there would be misunderstandings, but none of it’s true.”
The separation began seven years ago, as Jada confirmed during the interview, marking a long-standing arrangement that has remained private from the public eye. When asked about their decision to maintain this arrangement, Jada explained, “I think just not being ready yet. Still trying to figure out between the two of us how to be in a partnership, and in regards to how do we present that to people, you know? And we hadn’t figured that out.”
“I think by the time we got to 2016, we were just exhausted with trying. I think we were both kind of just still stuck in our fantasy of what we thought the other person should be,” Jada added. She further expressed her commitment to never allow their marriage to result in a divorce, saying, “I made a promise that there will never be a reason for us to get a divorce. We will work through whatever. And I just haven’t been able to break that promise.”
For now, divorce is not on the table. Jada emphasized, “We don’t want to. We love our family. And we love each other. It’s more of a life partnership. Ten years from now, Hoda, who knows?”
