The CW Renews Walker, Cancels Prequel Walker: Independence

According To Deadline The CW has canceled Walker prequel Walker Independence after one season. The move, which was expected, follows the CW’s renewal of mothership series Walker earlier today. The bulk of the CW’s existing scripted series will be canceled this week as the network is transitioning to a new business model of lower-cost scripted programming in pursuit of profitability. While Walker is the CW’s most watched series, Walker: Independence was in the middle of the pack ratings-wise.

Walker had been considered the frontrunner among the CW’s scripted series to snag a renewal. It is a strong ratings performer, ranking as the network’s most-watched linear show this season in Total Viewers. The series also is produced very efficiently by CBS Studios, something that is key to the new CW, which has stressed that they would be shifting toward lower-cost scripted programming in order to make the network profitable.
