Rajkummar Rao Turns Ruthless Gangster in Gritty ‘Maalik’ Trailer Set in 1980s Prayagraj

Packed with bullets, ambition, and betrayal, the crime drama ‘Maalik’ promises a dark, power-hungry journey through the heartland — with Rao in his most intense role yet.

In the gripping trailer of Maalik, Rajkummar Rao drops his comic charm and dives headfirst into the violent underworld of 1980s Prayagraj. Directed by Pulkit and hitting cinemas on July 11, the film is a bloody, ambitious tale of a man who stops at nothing to seize power in a region ruled by guns, politics, and pride.

Set in the Hindi heartland, Maalik follows Rao’s transformation into a fierce political gangster whose rise is fuelled by brutality and manipulation. His insatiable hunger for control soon brings him face-to-face with a powerful rival, played by the ever-formidable Saurabh Shukla. The situation further intensifies with the entry of Prosenjit Chatterjee, portraying a chain-smoking, hard-nosed police officer tasked with taking Maalik down.

The trailer echoes the raw energy of Mirzapur and Gangs of Wasseypur, showcasing blood-soaked corridors, brutal gunfights, and gritty dialogue. One standout scene shows a cold-eyed Maalik ruthlessly firing down a hallway — no mercy, no survivors.

According to the filmmakers, Maalik is a hard-hitting exploration of ambition, survival, and the steep price of power in a world defined by loyalty and violence. Speaking about the role, Rajkummar Rao shared, “This is the most hard-hitting character I’ve ever played. It pushed me to explore a much darker, more complex side of myself. Becoming Maalik was both a challenge and a thrill — and I think audiences will feel that intensity.”

Manushi Chhillar stars as Maalik’s wife, while Huma Qureshi makes a glamorous appearance in a special song. The ensemble cast also includes Anshumaan Pushkar (12th Fail) and acclaimed lyricist-actor Swanand Kirkire.

With its brutal energy and layered characters, Maalik is shaping up to be a gritty gangster saga that doesn’t pull any punches.
